The Art of Slow Travel in the Maldives

By Ananya Rao

There is a particular kind of luxury that has nothing to do with thread counts or champagne, and everything to do with time. In the Maldives, the greatest indulgence is permission to do beautifully little.

Begin with the water. A private overwater villa turns the reef into your front garden — slip in before breakfast, when the light is soft and the fish are unhurried, and you'll understand why guests return year after year.

Then there is the ritual of the sandbank dinner: a single table set on a crescent of sand that exists only at low tide, lit by lanterns and stars. It is the sort of moment we build entire journeys around.

Our advice? Resist the urge to fill the calendar. Choose one resort, stay longer, and let the days blur into one another. That is slow travel done right — and the Maldives is its finest classroom.
